The Energy Transition and the Role of Industrial Relations: Progress of the REJEnerAXion Project

The energy transition plays a crucial role in achieving the long-term goal of making Europe climate-neutral by 2050. This significant shift not only provides new economic perspectives through the creation of green jobs but also implies substantial adjustments and changes. Inevitably, this will result in the loss of jobs, both direct and indirect, in sectors related to the production of energy from fossil sources, with significant impacts at the regional level, especially in areas heavily dependent on coal and carbon.

REJEnerAXion focuses on studying transformations in the energy sector towards clean and sustainable energies, analyzing their impacts on working conditions, occupational structure, and socio-environmental levels. Through the exchange of experiences and best practices in industrial relations, it aims to enhance the competence of the involved social parties, identifying convergences and divergences in significant European member states. Practical recommendations will emerge to address the challenges of the energy transition, strengthening the role of industrial relations in the fair process of energy change at the national and European levels.

The project involves three transnational meetings, one held in Madrid on January 25, a second in Rome on June 16, and the third and final one scheduled for Bratislava in February 2024. The goal of these meetings is to assess research results, focusing on key themes such as the impact of the energy transition on employment, identifying barriers, and opportunities to enhance cooperation and mutual learning among partners.

To further enhance the dissemination of project information, bi-weekly video interviews have been published, and will continue to be published, on YouTube after the Rome meeting. In these interviews, project partners explain the results of their research and present related working papers, which will also be published bi-weekly on the official project website. Currently, video interviews with attached working papers related to research conducted in Germany and Spain are available online.
